Inside Your Body:  How Resveratrol Protects Your Cells

Resveratrol is a powerful polyphenol found in red wine and in the skin of grapes.

Some studies suggest that resveratrol plays a role in weight management, through calorie restriction.

And, it could also hold ant-aging and anti-diabetic properties.

Now researchers may have uncovered the secret to resveratrol.

Resveratrol as a PDE4 Inhibitor

There are many enzymes in your body, and each one is in control of a specific function- to break nutrients down.

PDE4, a type of enzyme, breaks down cAMP into an inactive form of AMP.

AMP, which stands for adenosine monophosphate, is the simplest form of energy used by the cells in your body.

Blocking PDE4 could increase cAMP levels and could potentially create an increased source for energy.

Blocking PDE4, some studies suggest, could also increase the function of your mitochondria.

Resveratrol could act as a PDE4 inhibitor which has the potential to increase cAMP levels in your cells.

Let me explain…

The Research

Researchers aimed to clarify the exact mechanism as to how Resveratrol works in your body.

They determined that Resveratrol competes with the PDE4 enzyme to block the breakdown of cAMP.

This leads to a cascade of events with the end product being an increase in NAD+ levels.

Increased levels of cAMP activate a protein in your cells, Epac1.

Activation of Epac1 stimulates the release of calcium into your cell.

The increase of calcium causes an increase in NAD+ and could activate SIRT1.

Activation of SIRT1, some studies suggest, could be associated with increased insulin sensitivity of your cells.

In insulin resistant cells, there are lower levels of SIRT1 which could increase insulin resistance.

However, resveratrol has been shown to increase the activation of SIRT1.

Resveratrol increases the expression of SIRT1 which, in turn, could increase your cells sensitivity to insulin.

The researchers concluded that resveratrol and PDE1 inhibitors could improve symptoms related to metabolic diseases associated with aging.

Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a potent polyphenol and has received a lot of press lately.

According to clinical research, resveratrol could increase mitochondrial function, energy levels, and improve glucose tolerance.

Resveratrol could play an important role in energy metabolism and could act as a powerful nutrient in preserving weight control and Longevity.
